Chinese involvement in Africa began in April 1955 and at that time was primarily a ramification of China’s policy towards the new states of Asia and the Middle east. What factors influenced those policies? To what extent did her ideological dispute with the Soviet Union affect her African policies? Did China indeed have a coherent African policy or was her activities merely the outcome of her ideological dispute with the Soviet Union ? Was Chinese policy that of fermenting revolutions throughout the continent? I wrote this study in 1989. The essay has been updated with extra material from various sources. The chapters after the conclusion of my essay are materials from cited sources.
